Christians Angered by “Wacky Week”

Many on the right reserve fear of liberals promoting their liberal values; many on the left reserve fear of the Christian right promoting their Christian values. Personally, I fear both. Here’s ABC News with a related story:

An elementary-school event in which kids were encouraged to dress as members of the opposite gender drew the ire of a Christian radio group, whose angry broadcast prompted outraged calls to the district office.

Students at Pineview Elementary in Reedsburg had been dressing in costume all last week as part of an annual school tradition called Wacky Week. On Friday, students were encouraged to dress either as senior citizens or as members of the opposite sex.

“We believe it’s the wrong message to send to elementary students,” said Jim Schneider, the [Voice of Christian Youth America network] program director. “Our station is one that promotes traditional family values. It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values. To promote this to elementary-school students is a great error.”

I think this Christian radio group is totally missing the point: if anything, the school is sending the message that dressing as the opposite gender is a strange thing to do; remember, they’re calling it “Wacky Week.”

Actually, I’m surprised a gay rights group hasn’t protested the school; and wouldn’t that be weird? An orthodox Christian group and a gay rights group both protesting the same thing. Only in America.

Of course, this wouldn’t be an issue if the government didn’t hold a monopoly on education, as it does now with the public school system. As the Department of Education grows (and wastes more and more of our money), American students continually perform worse relative to an international scale. Am I the only one who sees the correlation?

So that’s my ultimate solution to this problem (and many others): the voucher system, i.e. school choice. But that’s a topic I could write pages about, and I have to get to my 8 AM class, so I’ll just end here.

Oh one more thing — I’ll bet this Christian radio group is chock full of Republicans, so let me say to them: Stop giving us a bad name!
